We commonly think of musca domestica, the standard domestic housefly, as an annoying part of everyday life. Unfortunately, there is more to the story. These critters reproduce like mad, land on every food source they can, and carry a lot of bad diseases.
House Fly Exponential Reproduction
When the female fly is fertilized, she may lay as many as 100 eggs in the trash, on pet feces, or any decaying vegetable or animal matter. Within two to five days after hatching, the maggots have feasted on organic material and turn into pupae which are extremely hard to find. The pupae become adult flies and repeat the cycle. Although houseflies live a month at the longest they can hibernate over the winter.
Cleanliness First and Foremost
The best way to prevent house fly infestations is to clean up the kitchen, the bathroom, and the yard. Do not leave food sitting out and by all means clean the garbage container each time it is emptied. A strict sanitary regime will help you avoid a housefly infestation.
Diseases Carried by House Flies
There are two important issues with house flies and contagious diseases. One is that they can carry a lot of diseases. The other is that house flies can travel for many miles carrying those diseases. Flies carry infection on the hairs covering their bodies and on their legs. Every time they land and feed on animal feces, rotting garbage, or an animal carcass they pick up something and every time they land on a salad on your dinner table they leave a little present.
Houseflies can carry parasites like Giardia lamblia, Trichuris trichiura, Hymenolepis nana, Entamoeba histolytica, Enterobius vermicularis and Ascaris lumbricoides. Although houseflies do not get infected by these bacteria they can carry and transmit tuberculosis, cholera, salmonella, anthrax, and typhoid to name just a few. These are all bad actors all are reasons to avoid and treat housefly infestations.
Other species of flies in the Ventura, California area include bottle flies, drain flies, gnats, and fruit flies. However, the common house fly is the dominant fly species in the area.
Dealing with Flies
If you have a significant problem with flies, call us at Cal Termite and Pest Control. We will come and check out the problem. As needed, we will apply pesticides and treatments that will help. Then we will look at the root cause of your fly problem. That root cause is always that flies are attracted to certain food sources. Deny the fly access to those food sources and you will not have a problem. When the fly cannot get into your home because of adequate screens and doors you win. When the fly cannot find rotting material in the garbage or on the lawn it cannot lay its eggs with the expectation of those eggs hatching and you win. When there are limits to how much clean up you can do, we can help with treatments and other methods to keep the problem to a reasonably low level.
